Poetry is like a bird, it ignores all frontiers.
A Yevgeny Yevtushenko quotation
American Oystercatcher
This bird (Haematopus palliatus), occasionally called the American Pied …, is a member of family Haematopodidae. The bird is uniquely marked by its black and white body and a long, thick orange beak. This shorebird is approximately 19 inches (42 – 52 cm) in length.
Identification Tips:
• Length: 16 inches
• Large shorebird
• Bright orange, long, thick bill
• Head and breast black
• Dark gray back and wings
• White belly, pink legs
• Large white patch on inner wing
• White uppertail coverts and dark tail
The birds are strong, swift fliers and at times are graceful and elegant in their movements.
They have loud, striking notes of protest when the oyster catcher flies around an intruder on its breeding grounds. It is quite unlike any other bird notes. The sound is like wlteep, wheep, wiuceop, and is both vehement and penetrating.
Poetry is like a bird, it ignores all frontiers.
