This type of bird is one of the most common kind of bird there is. I am also called a cock or chanticleer (Gallus gallus), the female has another very common name. Immature males of my type of less than a year’s age are called cockerels. I am a polygamous bird. I am only one bird, however, and cannot easily guard several nests of eggs at once. I will guard the general area where my flock is nesting, and will attack other males of my type who enter my territory. During the daytime, I often sit on a high perch, usually several feet off the ground, to serve as a lookout for my flock. I will sound a distinctive alarm call if predators are nearby.
