The Eastern Screech Owl or Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl.

Their breeding habitat is deciduous or mixed woods in eastern North America. Usually solitary, they nest in a tree cavity, either natural or excavated by a woodpecker; they will also use nesting boxes. They are strictly nocturnal, roosting during the day in cavities or next to tree trunks.

Identification Tips:
• Length: 16 to 25 cm (6.3-9.8 in) inches
• Small, nocturnal, predatory bird
• Large, rounded head with ear tufts
• Yellow eyes
• Dense streaking on underparts with finer barring
• Some birds have rusty plumage, others dark gray
• Sexes similar

Similar species:
The Eastern Screech-Owl is very similar in plumage to Western and Whiskered Screech-Owls and is best separated by voice. Other small owls lack prominent ear tufts.

These birds mainly eat large insects, with invertebrates often comprising more than half of the birds diet. Favored are beetles, moths, crickets, grasshoppers and cicadas. Small mammals, ranging from shrews to rabbits, are taken, though small rodents comprise about 67% of mammals taken. Small birds ranging from chickadees to rock pigeons are often taken. Irregularly, reptiles, amphibians and fish are also preyed on.

Eastern Screech-Owls are active at night or dusk. They use their excellent hearing and night vision to locate prey.
