Canadian geese - bird quote

Canada Geese near Lake Erie

Canada Goose

The word goose (plural: geese) is the English name for a considerable number of birds, belonging to the family Anatidae. This family also includes swans, most of which are larger than true geese, and ducks, which are smaller.

The term goose applies to the female in particular. The word gander is used for a male in particular. Young birds before fledging are called goslings. A group of geese on the ground is called a gaggle; when geese fly in formation they are called a wedge or a skein.

Geese are monogamous, living in permanent pairs throughout the year; however, unlike most other permanently monogamous animals, they are territorial only during the short nesting season.

A number of other waterbirds, mostly related to the shelducks, have “goose” as part of their name.

Duck

Duck is the common name for a number of species in the Anatidae family of birds. The ducks are divided between several subfamilies in the Anatidae family.

Ducks are mostly aquatic birds, mostly smaller than the swans and geese, and may be found in both fresh water and sea water.

Ducks are sometimes confused with several types of unrelated water birds with similar forms, such as loons or divers, grebes, gallinules, and coots.

Ducks exploit a variety of food sources such as grasses, aquatic plants, fish, insects, small amphibians, worms, and small molluscs.

Diving ducks and sea ducks forage deep underwater. To be able to submerge more easily, the diving ducks are heavier than dabbling ducks, and therefore have more difficulty taking off to fly.

Dabbling ducks feed on the surface of water or on land, or as deep as they can reach by up-ending without completely submerging.

Swans and geese are not considered ducks.

Bird quotes about and referencing swallows

Barn Swallow

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world.

In Anglophone Europe it is just called the Swallow; in Northern Europe it is the only common species called a “swallow” rather than a “martin”.

Identification Tips:
• Length: 6 inches
• Tiny bill
• Dark orange forehead and throat
• Pale orange underparts
• Dark, iridiscent upperparts
• Long, deeply forked tail
• Juvenile similar to adult but paler underneath with a shorter tail
• Most often seen flying
• Will nest communally in mud nests under bridges, in barns and caves, etc

Similar species:
The Barn Swallow can be told from all swallows by its deeply forked tail.

There are six subspecies of Barn Swallow, which breed across the Northern Hemisphere.

Four are strongly migratory, and their wintering grounds cover much of the Southern Hemisphere as far south as central Argentina, the Cape Province of South Africa, and northern Australia.

The Barn Swallow is a bird of open country which normally uses man-made structures to breed and consequently has spread with human expansion.

Swallow Quotes

Human good turns out to be activity of soul exhibiting excellence, and if
there is more than one sort of excellence, in accordance with the best and
most complete. For one swallow does not make a summer, nor does one day; and
so too one day, or a short time, does not make a man blessed and happy.

Aristotle

Idiom definition – “For one swallow does not make a summer
Also : “One swallow does not make a spring, nor does one fine day”

Little Raven

The Little Raven (Corvus mellori) is a species of the crow and raven family Corvidae, that is endemic to Australia. It has all-black plumage, beak and legs with a white iris.

The Little Raven was first named in 1912; however, it wasn’t until 1967 there was consensus to separate it from the Australian Raven (C. coronoides) as a distinct species.

The Little Raven ranges over southeastern Australia from southern South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. They are also found in Kangaroo Island (S.A) and King Island (Bass Strait).

They live within scrub, agricultural areas, grazing pasture, woodlands to treeless plains, coasts, and suburbs.

Little Ravens tend to eat vegetable matter and feed mainly on the ground, but are probably omnivorous when the opportunity arises.

These birds often nest in a loose colony of up to fifteen pairs, with nests few meters apart.

The raven is considered first and foremost a bird of evil. A group of ravens is a “terror” of ravens and a “murder” of crows, a very similar bird.
