Barn Swallow
The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world.
In Anglophone Europe it is just called the Swallow; in Northern Europe it is the only common species called a “swallow” rather than a “martin”.
Identification Tips:
• Length: 6 inches
• Tiny bill
• Dark orange forehead and throat
• Pale orange underparts
• Dark, iridiscent upperparts
• Long, deeply forked tail
• Juvenile similar to adult but paler underneath with a shorter tail
• Most often seen flying
• Will nest communally in mud nests under bridges, in barns and caves, etc

The Barn Swallow can be told from all swallows by its deeply forked tail.
There are six subspecies of Barn Swallow, which breed across the Northern Hemisphere.
Four are strongly migratory, and their wintering grounds cover much of the Southern Hemisphere as far south as central Argentina, the Cape Province of South Africa, and northern Australia.
The Barn Swallow is a bird of open country which normally uses man-made structures to breed and consequently has spread with human expansion.

These birds and martins are a group of passerine birds in the family Hirundinidae which are characterized by their adaptation to aerial feeding. Because of the readiness with which some species nest in and around human settlements and buildings people have had a long experience with them and many myths and legends have arisen as a consequence. There is a famous place in California where these bird types migrate to/from.
These birds have a cosmopolitan distribution across the world and breed on all the continents except Antarctica. They also occur on a number of oceanic islands. A number of species are long-distance migrants. A few species of these birds are threatened with extinction by human activities, although other species have benefited from human changes to the environment and live in around humans.
These birds are excellent fliers, and use these skills to attract a mate and to feed. For the most part they are insectivorous, taking flying insects on the wing. On occasion they will snap prey off branches or on the ground.
Example: Just because you’ve won the $5000 poker tournament doesn’t mean you are going to win the $8,000,000 poker championship. Remember one swallow does not make a summer.
In other words, you should not assume something is true just because you have seen one piece of evidence for it or one instance of it.
