Northern Pintail

The Pintail or Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) is a widely occurring duck which breeds in the northern areas of Europe, Asia and North America. The Northern Pintail has a large range, estimated at 10 million square kilometers.

This is a fairly large duck, with a long pointed tail that gives rise to the species’ English and scientific names.

Identification Tips:
• Length: 18.5 inches Wingspan: 35 inches
• Medium-sized dabbling duck with very long neck, small head and attenuated rear
• Juvenile similar to adult female

Adult male alternate:
• Alternate plumage worn from fall through early summer
• Pale gray bill with black stripe down center
• Dark brown head
• White neck, breast and belly with white finger extending up back of neck to rear part of face
• Gray flanks and back with black centers to back feathers
• Whitish patch at rear portion of flanks bordering undertail coverts
• Black undertail coverts
• Long, black central tail feathers
• Green speculum with white rear border and chestnut forward border

Adult male basic:
• Similar to adult female but retains green speculum

Adult female:
• Gray bill
• Tan head and neck
• Mottled tan and dark brown back and body plumage, paler on belly
• Brown speculum with white rear border

Similar species:
Adult male unmistakable in alternate plumage. Females, immature and eclipse-plumage males are similar to many other female ducks but have a distinctive shape: very long-necked, small-headed and pointed-tailed. Note also female’s brown speculum bordered at the rear by white.

The Northern Pintail lives in open wetlands. It builds it’s nest on the ground, frequently some distance from water.

The bird feeds by dabbling for plant food and adds small invertebrates to its diet during the nesting season.

The Northern Pintail is highly gregarious when not breeding; forming large mixed flocks with other species of duck.

White-tipped Dove

White-tipped Dove: Have you seen this bird?

White-tipped Dove

The White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) is a large New World tropical dove.

Identification Tips:
* Length: 10 inches
* Pale head and underparts
* Darker upperparts
* Long, squared tail with white outer tips
* Sexes similar
* United States range restricted to southern Texas

Similar species:
Mourning Dove thinner with pointed tail.

The White-tipped Dove resembles the closely related Grey-fronted Dove, Leptotila rufaxilla, which prefers humid forest habitats. The best distinctions are the greyer forehead and crown.

It is a resident breeder from the southernmost Texas in the USA through Mexico and Central America south to western Peru and central Argentina. It also breeds on the offshore islands of northern South America, including Trinidad and Tobago and the Netherlands Antilles. The food of this species is mainly seeds obtained by foraging on the ground, but it will also take insects, including butterflies and moths. The call is a deep hollow ooo-wooooo.

The White-tipped Dove is usually seen singly or in pairs, and is rather wary. Its flight is fast and direct.

I think we consider too much the good luck…

I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.

A Franklin D. Roosevelt quotation

Prairie falcon

Identify this bird

Prairie Falcon

The Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus) is a medium-sized falcon of western North America. It is about the size of a Peregrine Falcon or a crow, with an average length of 16 in, wingspan of 40 in, and weight of 1.6 lb. Like other falcons, females are noticeably bigger than males.

The Prairie Falcon breeds from southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and south-central British Columbia south through the western United States to the Mexican states of Baja California, Durango, and northern San Luis Potosí. It is much less migratory than the other North American falcons, but in winter it does withdraw somewhat from the northernmost and highest-elevation parts of its breeding range and spreads west to the deserts and Pacific coast of California, and south to Baja California Sur, Jalisco, and Hidalgo.

Prairie Falcons are often used in falconry. Although it is considered hard to train and unpredictable, it’s the most popular falcon in the United States. They are also valued for their aggressiveness. Their population is estimated to be stable or increasing at over 5000 pairs.

God gives every bird his worm…

God gives every bird his worm, but He does not throw it into the nest.

A P. D. James quotation

Tree Swallow

Identify this bird

This bird, Tachycineta bicolor, is a migratory passerine bird that breeds in North America and winters in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.

Some characteristics:
* Forked tail
* Length: 5 inches
* Tiny bill
* Iridescent blue-green upperparts
* White underparts
* Female duller than male
* Nests in cavities near water
* Often found in large flocks

It averages 13.5 cm (5 inches) long and weighs about 20g. The bill is tiny. The adult bird has iridescent blue-green upperparts, white underparts, and a very slightly forked tail. The female usually has duller colors than the male, often more greenish than the more bluish male. The juvenile plumage is dull grey-brown above and may have hint of a gray breast band.

The birds nest in natural or artificial cavities near water and are often found in large flocks. They readily use nest boxes, including those built for bluebirds. Declines in cavity-builder populations are resulting in fewer natural nesting sites for these birds.

The early bird catches the worm

The early bird catches the worm

A famous quotation

American Robin

Identify this bird

This bird is the largest thrush in North America. It is widely and familiarly known in the United States and Canada. To millions of people it is as well known as the crow, and far more popular.

Their nest is kept scrupulously clean while the nestlings are in it. The parents seize the fecal sacs as they are voided and frequently swallow them. The male parent takes practically full charge of the fledglings. This enables his mate to prepare at once for another brood. They show persistency in their nesting habits, often returning to the same nest or situation year after year.

Various insects which are pests or near pests in woodlots have been identified from stomachs of these common birds. Caterpillars and beetles are the items of animal food taken in greatest quantity by these birds, with bugs, flies, and grasshoppers of considerably less importance. Spiders, earthworms, millipeds, sowbugs, and snails are additional kinds of animal food they will also eat.
