There is nothing in which the birds differ more…

There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.
A Robert Lynd quotation

Identify this bird
In the elevated and arid, or semi-arid, plains, extending northward into southern Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas is where you’ll find this bird. In their somber gray dress, which matches their surroundings so well it might be difficult to see them at first.
Here, as one drives along over the winding desert trails, dodging the thorny shrubs or still more forbidding clumps of cactus, he may surprise a pair or perhaps a little flock of these birds. They do not attempt to escape by flight, but scatter in different directions, running with remarkable speed, dodging in and out among the desert vegetation. They are soon lost to sight, for they can run faster than we can.
This bird is a decidedly terrestrial bird with very powerful legs, which it uses to advantage in the rather open desert growth in which it lives. It can run very fast in the smooth open spaces among the desert plants. It prefers to escape by running rather than flying. In many instances they are found far from water, but they make regular visits to the watering places.
There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.

You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow…

You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.
A Chinese proverb

Identify this bird
The bird is found North and also South America.
Unlike most of our migrant birds, this bird arrives in New England quite unobtrusively. It’s usually about May 10th in the latitude of Boston. For a few days it remains quiet, both in voice and demeanor. We are apt to see our first bird of this type starting the season sitting silent and alone on a fencepost or a wire or making a short flight out from a tree and back again. It appears listless, as if not interested in its surroundings, as if it were lazy and tired.
This particular bird has few enemies. A hawk may occasionally catch him off guard but not too often. Formerly man was the bird’s deadly enemy. Nowadays, however, the bird is protected as a song bird.
You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.
Variations:
You cannot prevent the birds of worry and care from flying over your head. But you can stop them from building a nest in your head.
