Northwestern Crow
The Northwestern Crow (Corvus caurinus) is an all-black passerine bird of the crow genus that is a native of northwestern part of North America.
It is very similar to the more western forms of the widespread American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) but it is slightly smaller. It’s calls are different from the American crow.
Identification Tips:
• Length: 14.5 inches
• Entirely black plumage
• Squared-off tail
• Range restricted to coastal areas from Alaska to Washington
Similar species:
American Crow is very similar but has different range. Common Raven is larger with wedge-shaped tail and different call.
The Northwestern Crow, as its name infers, is seen from the north-western coastal regions and offshore islands of southern Alaska, down through British Columbia and Washington state.
This type of crow can often be seen in and near urban areas. Beaches and shorelines are the principal forage areas of this species of crow. The Northwestern Crow eats stranded fish, shellfish, crabs and mussels, and also searches through refuse containers for suitable food items.

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large owl of the typical owl family Strigidae. The bird is also known in North America as the Arctic Owl or the Great White Owl.
Identification Tips:
• Length: 20 inches Wingspan: 55 inches
• Large, diurnal, predatory bird
• Large, rounded head
• Yellow eyes
• Entirely white plumage with scattered dark spots
• Immatures are boldly barred with black
• Sexes similar
This species of owl nests on the ground, building a scrape on top of a mound or boulder. A site with good visibility, ready access to hunting areas, and a lack of snow is chosen. Gravel bars and abandoned eagle nests may be used.
The Snowy Owl is typically found in the northern circumpolar region, where it makes its summer home north of latitude 60 degrees north. However, it is a particularly nomadic bird.
Snowy Owls winter south through Canada and northernmost Eurasia, with irruptions occurring further south in some years. They have been reported as far south as Texas, Georgia, the American Gulf states, southern Russia, northern China and even the Caribbean.
