Common Yellowthroat

The Common Yellowthroat, (Geothlypis trichas), is a New World warbler. Common Yellowthroats are small songbirds.

Identification Tips:
• Length: 4.25 inches
• Small, insect-eating bird
• Thin, pointed bill
• Yellow throat and breast
• Brownish flanks
• Whitish belly
• Olive upperparts
• Pink legs
• Considerable plumage variation across its range

Adult male:
• Black mask with white upper border
• Bright yellow throat

Female and immature:
• Brownish-olive head
• Broken white eye ring
• Throat and breast not as bright yellow as adult males
• Immature males begin to acquire the black mask in the fall

These birds range over: North America, Central America, and the West Indies.

There are 13 races of this bird. These races differ mainly in the males’ facial patterns and the brightness of the yellow underparts.

The Common Yellowthroat birds feed on insects, which are usually captured in dense vegetation, but sometimes caught in midair.
